PREVENTIVE CARE

Picture
It is very important for your pet to have routine wellness check-ups at least once a year.
Seeing a veterinarian regularly gives your veterinarian better understanding of your pet's personality & habits and it will also help your pet to feel at ease during visits to the veterinarian.
The veterinarian will perform a comprehensive examination of your pet in a friendly manner, and will ask about your pet's behavior at home. The veterinarian will offer the best program of Preventive care for your pet such as vaccination, de-worming, flea/heartworm prevention, spay/neuter, dental care, etc., because each pet has different needs.
Routine blood work/urinalysis helps to detect abnormalities before the pet becomes sick seriously. It will also provide a base-line data for future comparison.

MEDICINE

Picture

West Vancouver Veterinary Hospital treats wide variety of diseases/conditions such as skin and ear problems, allergies, pain management, cancer chemotherapy and long term care of chronic diseases for both dogs and cats.

When your pet is sick, the veterinarian will take time to do a thorough medical history check and will ask you a lot of questions about your pet to understand the problem better. Keeping pet's diary may be helpful to explain your pet's daily conditions. Sometimes, it's a good idea to bring the samples such as feces, vomitus, urine, etc, in a clean container. After the physical examination, the veterinarian will discuss the diagnostic and treatment options with a clear estimate of the costs involved so that you will not be confused or stressed financially.

Many of the diagnostic tests we can perform on site and provide you a diagnosis in short time. This helps us in providing right treatment at right time. If we need to perform further testing such as an ultrasound or endoscopy we can either make an arrangement at our own hospital or we can send a referral to get it done at a referral center.
After we have established a diagnosis we can offer you options for treatment.

SURGERY

We perform all the routine surgeries including spay/neuter, abdominal surgery, urinary bladder stone removal, anal sacculectomy, correction of entropion & cherry eye, lumpectomy etc.
Orthopedic Surgeries are performed by a board certified surgeon.

DENTISTRY

Regular dental cleaning will keep your pet's mouth healthy and prolong the teeth life. If a    pet's tooth is painful he/she can't chew /hold food with that tooth. Such a tooth may need  extraction or other appropriate treatment. We have in house digital radiography which  enables us to diagnose  the pathology underneath the gum and help us tailor the  dental  treatment as per need of your pet.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Pre-anesthetic Blood testing:  We strongly recommend pre-anesthetic blood testing. This can help the veterinarian in diagnosing underlying disease conditions. Blood test also provides a base line data for future reference.

Peri-operative Fluids: We put an intravenous catheter before anesthesia and the sedated animal will get fluids in its vein during and after the surgical/dental procedures.Fluid maintains the organ per-fusion, corrects dehydration and maintains the blood pressure during anesthesia as all anesthetic drugs lead to a fall in blood pressure. An i/v catheter will keep the vein portal open and we can inject the emergency drugs in the vein in case an emergency arises during anesthesia. Fluids also help in quicker recovery after anesthesia.
We monitor the  heart and respiratory rates, temperature, and blood pressure during all anesthetic procedures.

Important Note:Surgery and dentistry procedures need general anesthesia. We request that you drop your pet off between 8:00 & 9:00 a.m. This allows us time for presurgical blood work and other preparations. We also request that you withhold food after midnight the night before your pet's scheduled surgery. Please call us well in advance to book a time for a procedure and to get your questions answered if you have any.
